Cheap dental care

March 3rd, 2007

Updated 30th April 2009

This is just a bit of useful information to save you money on dental bills.

Description

The Oral Health Service is a regional service managed by the Auckland District Health Board (ADHB) with the majority of clinics held at Greenlane Clinical Centre, Middlemore Hospital, Buckland Road and the Mangere Refugee Centre.

Children and adults from the Waitemata District Health Board are treated at Greenlane Clinical Centre.

The Oral Health Service also holds clinics and inpatient and daystay operating sessions at Starship Children’s Health, Auckland City Hospital, and Middlemore Hospital.
Most dental services for the Counties Manukau population are provided at the Oral Health Clinic at Middlemore Hospital and Buckland Road Southern Cross Campus at Mangere.

SERVICES PROVIDED BY THE ORAL HEALTH DENTAL SERVICE

* Emergency relief of pain clinics. (includes tooth pulled)
* Primary care (community) dental service for IHC and special needs children.
* Secondary services (hospital) for medically compromised patients including cardiac, oncology, respiratory, immuno-compromised.
* Cleft lip & palate and orthodontics.
* Tertiary services (complex hospital) in both inpatient and outpatient settings across the Auckland region.
* After hours on-call regional acute service for oral and maxillofacial surgery for the treatment of acute trauma.

Relief of Pain Service

* $40.00 (except children and referred psychiatric patients who are free). This needs to be paid on the day of treatment at the Cashiers Office, Ground Floor, Greenlane Clinical Centre or directly to the Receptionists at Middlemore Hospital.
* We accept payment by cash or EFTPOS only.
* The $40.00 user part charge covers the consultation time and x-ray. If you are required to come back for further treatment or you decide to seek private dental treatment, this does not mean that your RPO consultation is free.
* Some treatments will have an extra charge, for instance, the extraction of wisdom teeth under general anaesthetic costs $350.00.
* The Oral Health staff will advise you of any additional charges.

Kids

Routine dental checks are provided free for all children through school clinics. Free dental treatment is also available if requested.

Teenagers

The Government’s Dental Benefits Scheme aims to cover the cost of dental care for teenagers aged 13 to 18. But involvement in this subsidised scheme is voluntary and many dentists prefer not to participate. There are also restrictions on the types of dental care available. To obtain this free service you must register with a dentist who subscribes to the scheme.

For details of local school clinics and dentists offering free services to adolescents, contact the Dental Service Manager in your local District Health Board (see the ‘Hospitals & other service providers’ section in the front of the White Pages).

    Hey Julie,

thanks for the good advice coz you can really pay a fortune on your teeth. Would be good if you can still tell us the name of the organisation next to Hendersons Court House… just to have one more options.

I’ve called the dentists listed above, but can’t get under $100+ for a filling. Also, the Sylvia Park listing and Manukau listing are answered by the same receptionist, and the Otahuhu listing has a disconnected phone. Have I mis-understood something here ?

  8. October 2nd, 2008 at 14:40 | #8

Hi Roy, What you write sounds strange.

Have you phoned Albany and Henderson also?

Did they ask if you had a community service card maybe?

    October 13th, 2008 at 12:01 | #9

Hi, I phoned the Sylvia Par, Manukau and Papakura numbers and they are all answered by the same lady in Albany!! Also she says the specials only are for those that live in West Auckland or North Shore and fillings start from $140. Ouch. I was hoping I had found what I was looking for here.

    November 14th, 2008 at 07:51 | #10

    Hey
I have also rung this place and was quoted $100 or more for fillings. The xrays $25 and Extractions are $40 but even with a community services card it’s over $100 for the fillings. I’m going tomorrow to get a quote so will find out more.

  11. Goretti
    January 21st, 2009 at 13:04 | #11

Melodie, did you get your quote? Has anyone else been their lately and got any prices?

  12. January 21st, 2009 at 13:36 | #12

I think I need to re visit these places.

The Greenlane hospital information is correct. They don’t ask for community service card either.

As for the others, I thought they were all under the same program. I guess this is only where the funding has come through. Use your imagination if you must to get into the right places until the other places follow suit. But I will ask around to see what is better on offer.

I went to Wai trust (henderson), they charge MORE than the moderately priced dentist I used to go to on the north shore, and he’s a HACK too, he wanted to remove one of my teeth just because it would save me money when I started moaning about his prices, WTF, I left really pissed off and pretty unimpressed, I wouldnt send my dog to that place it was dirty, the dentist was f**King useless and I ended up not booking to have any work done after a free 35second check, in which he looked, didnt tell me anything about the condition of my teeth, even when I asked, TWICE, and couldnt tell me how many fillings I needed or where.

DO NOT GO TO THIS DENTIST UNLESS YOU WANT YOU TIME WASTED OR TO BE RIPPED OFF, .. there are other places just not this guy.

  17. April 10th, 2009 at 13:19 | #17

Hi Lizzy, anyone can go to greenlane.

  18. yolanda
    April 28th, 2009 at 09:25 | #18

just an update on your info re Greenlane,Today – Arrived just after 6am and waited patiently until the doors opened at 7am, then waited again until 7:15am for dental to open.
ON entering was asked if i had my “board” ???? i asked
APPARENTLY you have to be there at 5AM !!!! grab one of the 15 available boards (left somewhere outside, this wasnt clarified) and then wait for the next 2.5 hours until they open!!
Part that confused me most was of the 20 people in the dental reception there were only 3 people with boards ??? where were the other 12 I wonder ???
Also if you are in extreme pain I was told to just go to the doctor!

  19. yolanda
    April 28th, 2009 at 10:07 | #19

oh just a little extra info – you MUST pay on the day. Cash and eftpos ONLY. You CAN NOT take the bill to winz.
Although you are entitled to a $300 annual dental grant via winz (this includes low income families)and this doesnt have to be paid back.
You need to get a quote from an approved dentist (they will be able to tell you if they are) and its only for emergency work.

  20. April 28th, 2009 at 22:18 | #20

Thanks Yolanda for updates. it seems Greenlane is getting very busy to change things the way they have.

  21. Hemant
    April 30th, 2009 at 19:42 | #21

does someone has an idea where can we get braces at reasonable price done for my son in auckland

  22. April 30th, 2009 at 23:12 | #22

Hi Hemant, the only thing I can think of is phoning around the dental schools. They have to experiment on patients and often if you are the guinea pig for training you get things free or cheap.

This is the way the Australian Dental Hospitals are able to offer free and cheap dental care. There must be something going on in NZ.

Good luck! And let us know how you got on.

    May 6th, 2009 at 21:44 | #23

Hi there, some good info for auckland area but do you have any info about other parts of NZ? i dont have a CSC and dental prices in my area (palmerston north) seem to start way out of range… hence the reason i never go! its a bad circle!! any help appreciated!

  24. May 7th, 2009 at 02:01 | #24

Hi Natasha, maybe you could phone the hospital in your area and see what they have available.

I wish I could know the information in other areas to help all NZer’s out.

hi, can i have tooth fillings done in greenlane? and how about crowns and root canals? how much would they cost? thanks

  26. May 18th, 2009 at 10:56 | #26

Hi Adrian, this is Greenlane’s phone number 367 0000

  27. Fiona
    May 20th, 2009 at 12:26 | #27

I just phoned the Greenlane Oral Clinic to find out the deal. Apparently they do extractions only (no other dental work) and this costs $40. The process is …..turn up at the main building at 5:30am (I am not joking). There is a trolley there which contains some clipboards, each with a number on it. You select a clipboard and fill out your details and then wait. And wait some more. The number on the clipboard is the order in which you will be seen once the clinic opens. And that, my friends, is NZ’s somewhat draconian ‘emergency’ dental system!

    Hi guys

The peoples Health Clinic on Mt Albert Street in the city does cheap dental care of you have a community card. $40 for extraction or filling no matter the size or difficulty. X-rays are $25 each. Consultation is $40. Without a CC fillings and extactions are $75 to $140 depending on size of job and difficulty. Consultation is $75, and X-rays are also $75. Hope this helps. The listing is in the phone book.

hi, dose anyone know of a good clinic in west auckland

  30. Lis Good
    May 25th, 2009 at 19:14 | #30

Smile dental in west aucks do the same deal as the mt albert one above.
Fillings are abit more expensive quoted AT THE TIME, also for WINZ if req as entitled to $400 subsidy for dental a year.
530am for the oral health clinic is incorrect as the doors do not open til 715 at the hospital. It is first in first served for 20 ppl per day. The do not do root canal or crowns. They do wisdom teeth under GA , fillings and extractions only.

    Thanks

Hi There, it might be better to phone them up and ask.

    October 7th, 2009 at 15:41 | #38

I went to the greenlane hospital this morning at 6.45am and missed out on a clip board apparently some of the people were there since 5am and they dont leave the boards in a trolley they get handed out by a security guard at 6.45am and he only hands out so many (meaning it may not be 20) like today he only gave out 7 because there was only 1 dentist on at the time and they would only take a certain amount of people so if you dont get a clip board outside the main doors its not worth hanging around waiting because the receptionist will tell you to try again tomorrow unless your face is swollen or its for a child. my advise is ring the clinic the day before and ask how many dentist are going to be on the next day because you dont want to be waiting for hours only to find out they are only taking the first few.

Hi there, I’m a journalism student and I’m writing a story on oral health in NZ and how people aren’t going to dentists because it’s so expensive. I’m thinking of going to Greenlane tomorrow to talk to some people waiting, and I was wondering if anyone here would share their opinion with me?

Are these dental services for all the public to use or do you have to be a single parent or on a low income.

    October 14th, 2009 at 22:43 | #42

for the public to use.. the relief of pain service $40 for a extraction is only if u have a CSC card tho.

anyone can use the hospital if ur there early .. first in first served.. kids really sick or elderly are first .. middlemore is quieter btw not as busy as greenlane

    February 17th, 2010 at 12:15 | #44

Hi, Please ever don’t go to Dr. Peter Ng, Sandrigham Dental centre. I have had horrible experience with him. I just went for examination of my teeth as my gums were sore and he suggested me to extract my wisdom tooth and he just left in the half way removing only some portion of it and informed that he cannot reach and I could feel the pain even though he had injected me. Next day, my gums were swelling and had severe pain.

  45. February 17th, 2010 at 16:28 | #45

    @Chitra
Hi Chitra, …you poor thing. Your ordeal sounds horrible. My son has had 2 wisdom teeth removed so far. Each one is a mission because they have grow crooked. Thanks for writing about Dr. Peter Ng, Sandrigham Dental centre. It’s important to have a good dentist.

I hope the pain and swelling goes soon.

    Hi all;

I’m not working and I have had a horrible time with winz for the last 6 months. I need to get fillings but I can’t afford standard rates. Can anyone recommend a cheap (but reliable!) place in Auckland.

  47. February 20th, 2010 at 15:47 | #47

HI noconfidence, I wish we had an answer for you. Unfortunately our government health system doesn’t cover fillings but I know it is something of interest to the government.

I guess it is just a matter of phoning around. I think we must have a place where dentists train and they would have to train on patients. Maybe that might be something to look into.

Thanks. I did some investigation of the links already published here. Lis Good mentioned the peoples centre trust. In it’s pricing they appear to mentioned found that fillings under ‘relief of pain treatments’. I’ll call them next week to verify if this is correct.

Hi there is no peoples centre in Mt Albert that does dental the only peoples centre that does dental is this one http://www.peoplescentre.co.nz/contact.php
in fact im heading in there this week so i will let u all know if they are as cheap as they sound!
I have had good experiences with Whitecross dental in Otahuhu.
You can also get a quote and take it back to WINZ if your on a benefit and they will advance you upto $400 to pay for dental treatment.
