Schools As Mental Health Clinics

August 5th, 2006

Elementary and Secondary Education Act.
In 1965 came the Elementary and Secondary Education Act
This essentially put Psychiatry and Psychology in the drivers seat of society and firmly established the policies that would harm our children’s minds for the next thirty years.
The ESEA allocated massive federal funds and opened the school doors to a flood of Psychiatrists’ Psychologists, Psychiatric Social Workers, Psychiatric Programs, Psychological Programs and Psychological Testing that continues today.

I think this article is alarmist and it appears to apply to the US and not NZ. No school that I know of employs either a psychiatrist or a psychologists, and nor are there any close links between schools and psyche units. There are people who work as educational psychologists, but they are more interested in the psychology of learning and have nothing to do with disorders which is the role of a clinical psychologist.

As far as I can see, Kevin, there is no need for what you say.

Thanks for your opinion. Always valued of course. Maybe the plan hasn’t been fully implemented in New Zealand yet or is slightly different?

Do you think you should protect everyone from such information. I say put it out there so that people are ware of what is happening or what could happen.

The radio shows below maybe of interest to you.

Well, this issue I believe is open to debate and I would be keen to get a view from a few educators and other professionals. This all arose from Julie’s experience and perhaps I am naive in wanting to believe that her experience is not the norm however am keen to hear any other experiences good or bad. Regardless, I guess hearing about it will make me more vigilant going forward.

I think what is alarming at the moment is the amount of resources and power being given to CYFS. Because such a department has all this money to spend it looks for solutions to take care of children.

They look as if they might be entering the primary schools with social workers who will be looking for any unusual behaviour or physical ailments. High schools have counsellors at present but younger age children need more expertise as they are not considered old enough to understand what is happeneing to them.

This is also because the school teachers feel they are not able to take control of such a thing.

Once this becomes a reality we will be following information research here in NZ gives. One particular research that is worrying is that bullies come from homes where they are being bullied and other misbehaved children are being diagnosed ADD, ADHD and Autistic. But then, who knows if we will end up back at a ‘Peter Ellis” case.

Social workers are not experts in behaviours so child Psychologist will be receiving quite a few referrals.

What is happening in America (as per normal behaviour) does trend over here. And we will soon see what Kevin talks of, a reality. Sorry New Zeal.

    KCrispin,

The argument on the other side is that social workers that have gone into the primary schools have saved lives. It doesn’t matter which way you look at it “good and bad” will come from it. The argument will be, “Is it worth getting it wrong 10 times to get it right 10 times?”

You have to be vigilent as a parent. You have to know what any expert is doing with your child.

Experts are forever working out whether or not certain way things are being tackled are right or wrong. That is what research does. It either agrees with or does not agree with whatever it is researching.

What we do today for our children will be at some stage in the future be proved wrong. And things will change. And again that will be proved wrong and again things will change.
