Working for Families package
Working for Families is a package the Government has put together to help families financially who are under earning together or seperate a certain amount.
Working for families is giving fanancial assistance for childcare, housing rental or mortgage, and family assistance to help with costs of raising a family.
Wellington’s People’s Centre website
expresses it’s concerns around the changing of the special benefit which is often a top up for beneficiaries when rents are excessive or other costs are higher than normal or with paying of appliances etc. This ’special benefit’ will be replaced with ‘temporary additional support’ which comes into effect from 1st April 2006. This change will only effect new beneficiaries which means they will have to reapply every 3 months and show how the need will be lessened.
Inland revenue’s calculator will show you what you are expected to receive from what you are expecting to earn. It is a good idea to give it a go to see if you will be better off.
Child Support is not considered income and is payed seperately to all other payments. Inland revenue’s calculator will work out amount.
Work and Income are not interested in shifting beneficairies from one benefit to the other. They will shift you over if you do not get better benefits from say, the DPB.
There is also the Community Services Card to consider which entitles the user to a subsidy on GP visits and prescription charges.
Adults get a subsidy of $15 for a visit to a doctor while Children aged 6 -18 get a subsidy of $20 for a visit to a doctor.
For prescriptions the government prescription charge is reduced from $15 to $3 per item (but when the medicines themselves are only partly subsidised there will still be additional charges).
Community Card Site
The income threshold for this card is low to middle income earners and there are many things IRD consider an Income.
This includes any money you and your partner get from any source, such as wages or salary; income support; investments; part-time work; student allowances; your own business; Family Assistance from Inland Revenue; maintenance payments; private pensions; rent or boarders; and accident insurance payments like ACC.
Any regular benefits you get like free board, meals or transport, also count as income.
Work and Income site for income amounts
There are good reason’s for working besides the income you receive weekly (at first). One needs to think about how income increases as the skills do and promotions. And of course self-esteem increases, friendships, etc.
Before you jump right in think about the pro’s and con’s, those financial and non-financial.
Include your income and extra payments from ‘Working for families’
Include child Support.
Work out how much you pay roughly for doctors and prescriptions and whether you need a community service card.
